Compare / Contrast Essay Writing

Compare / Contrast Essay Writing

Compare / Contrast Essay
Before my students write a compare and contrast essay, I have them do the following exercise in groups. It’s a lot of fun and gives them a template for writing about their own topics after the activity. This activity demystifies the process and structure for a compare/contrast essay. I usually get the best essay results of the quarter after using this exercise. You will need: 1 white poster board and marker for each group, or just use the handout 1 handout for each group 2 similar food items for each group (I like to bring a different pair for each group, usually store brand vs. name brand chips, cookies, fruit snacks etc….). If you don’t want to use food, or the budget doesn’t permit, you can use stuffed animals, games,…

A Strategy to Improve Student Custom Essay Writing

A Strategy to Improve Student Custom Essay Writing

Custom Essay
The only way I’ve found for students to really grow as custom essay writers is for them to write a lot and get meaningful feedback on their work. The reality, though, is there’s only one of me and 170+ of them, so my time with each student is limited. One way to maximize writing growth is a technique my students have dubbed, “Crazy Custom Essay Week.” Here’s how it works: In three days, students write three different in-class custom essays, which I collect at the end of each hour. On the fourth day, I randomly choose one of the three prompts and that’s the paper students clean up and turn in as their final draft. Basically, they write three custom essays and I grade one. More details: This routine started…

Writing a Research Paper – Body Paragraphs

Body Paragraphs
You’ve got your topic, you’ve got your research, and you’ve got a working thesis. Now how do you put it all together? If you learn the basic building block of the body paragraphs of research papers, your job will be a lot easier. Your introduction and conclusion will probably be structured a little differently, and not every paragraph will follow this format, but it’s a good place to start. This method also helps you get the right balance of your own words and research in the paper, which should be about half and half. The “Research Sandwich” As a general rule, each body paragraph will comprise one or more building blocks we’ll call “research sandwiches.” This is the formula: Your own words (topic sentence with your opinion) Research (direct quote…

Persuasive Essay
You will want to review a variety of sources to write a good persuasive essay. A research paper focuses on academic sources, but with a persuasive essay, you can use a broader array of sources to help influence your readers. For example, to appeal to a logical audience, you will want to use academic sources. To appeal to people’s emotions, you may want to find a story or personal experience that moves your audience to action. You could also look for an opinion piece in a newspaper or magazine that has the same opinion as you do. Where do I find sources? Academic search engines. Many schools and libraries subscribe to academic search engines such as EBSCO or Academic Search Premiere or InfoTrac. These search engines filter results so you…

Writing A Thesis Statements

Thesis Statement
Developing a good thesis statement is the most important part of an essay. It presents your opinion or argument and lets the reader know what to expect from the paper. Where do you start? Topic: Texting and Driving Questions: Who is texting and driving? Is it really that dangerous? What kind of laws exist about texting and driving? Why do…
